Every limited liability company operating in the United States needs to designate a registered agent. Even after you identify your initial registered agent in your formation paperwork, there are several reasons for why you may need to change the registered agent for your LLC in Oklahoma.
Your registered agent could be moving out of state, or they could be a former co-owner or employee who no longer works for your organization. Who Can Be an Oklahoma Registered Agent?
An Oklahoma registered agent is a person or business entity that has a physical address in the state. You or one of your co-owners can serve as your own registered agent, you can designate a friend or family member for this role, you can hire a lawyer or accountant as your agent, or you can hire an online business services company to provide registered agent service.
No matter who you choose to be your registered agent, they need to be physically present at the address provided to the state during all standard business hours. This person or entity does not need to have any prior experience being a registered agent, but it’s wise to choose a registered agent who is familiar with the serious responsibilities that come with this role.
There is no minimum age requirement on who can be a registered agent in the state of Oklahoma. According to the Oklahoma Secretary of State, “A registered agent may be either an individual Oklahoma resident or a domestic or foreign corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership that is reflected upon the Secretary of State’s records and in good standing, or it may be the entity itself when filing on behalf of an Oklahoma entity.”

What Is the Procedure for Changing Your LLC Registered Agent in Oklahoma?
While the role of the registered agent is vitally important for any American business entity, this role can always be changed, and there are different rules for how to change your agent depending on which state your business operates in.
In Oklahoma, there are two options for a limited liability company to change its registered agent: filing a Change or Designation form, or amending the LLC’s articles of organization.
Option 1) Filing a Change or Designation Form
The first option for changing an LLC’s registered agent in Oklahoma is to file a Change or Designation of Registered Agent and/or Registered Office and/or Principal Office form. There are different versions of this form for domestic and foreign entities, and both have a $25 filing fee. You can file these forms online, by mail, or in person.
Option 2) Amending the Articles of Organization
The other way for LLCs to change their registered agent in this state is by filing the Amended Articles of Organization of an Oklahoma Limited Liability Company form for domestic entities, or the Amended or Corrected Application for Registration form for foreign entities. The domestic version of this form costs $50 to file, whereas the foreign version costs $100. These forms can also be filed online, by mail, or in person.
Oklahoma does not list processing times on the Secretary of State’s website, so we called their office to find out. Online filings take an average of 1-2 business days, while mailed documents take about 7 business days. In-person filings are typically processed while you wait. There are no expediting options available in Oklahoma.

A registered agent service is a company that specializes in being a registered agent for a wide variety of businesses across the country, bringing tons of expertise and a healthy dose of reliability to the role.
Most professional registered agent services operate on a national basis, meaning there’s no restrictions on which states you can operate your business in. They also tend to charge affordable rates, as you can find several registered agent services that charge around $10/month or even less for this service. In addition, most of these companies will also offer to handle the process of changing a registered agent for you.

The Law for Changing Your LLC Registered Agent in Oklahoma
It’s always important to be well-informed regarding the specific laws for changing your registered agent. Oklahoma’s registered agent laws vary depending on what type of business entity you operate, although the laws do not distinguish between foreign/domestic classifications, so all limited liability companies follow the same rules and regulations.
Specifically, Title 18 of the Oklahoma Statutes says:
- “A limited liability company may designate or change its registered agent, registered office, or principal office by filing with the Office of the Secretary of State a statement authorizing the designation or change and signed by any manager.
- A limited liability company may change the street address of its registered office by filing with the Office of the Secretary of State a statement of the change signed by any manager.
- A designation or change of a principal office or registered agent or street address of the registered office for a limited liability company under this subsection is effective when the Office of the Secretary of State files the statement, unless a later effective date or time, which shall be a specified date or time not later than a time on the ninetieth day after the filing, is provided in the statement.”
If you operate a limited liability company in the state of Oklahoma, you need to designate a registered agent to receive important government document deliveries on your behalf. If you decide at any time that you would rather change your registered agent to a different individual or business entity, it’s important to know what that process looks like.
In Oklahoma, an LLC may change its registered agent by filing a Change or Designation form, or by amending its articles of organization. They’re both simple documents with reasonable filing fees, but if you’d rather have a registered agent service handle this task for you, you certainly have that option.
